3 Unlikely Lessons Learnt from The Summer I Turned Pretty

Written by Aashi Bains

The Summer I Turned Pretty was undeniably the standout show of the season, with its Wednesday airings marking the start of the week for keen watchers. Even if you weren’t an avid watcher, the debate of Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah dominated social media, making the show’s impact hard to avoid.

Alongside emotional love confessions, a stunning soundtrack and beautiful locations, the show occasionally appeared to be divisive amongst fans worldwide. As watchers became engrossed in a series of dramatic decisions, it was often a matter of seconds between fans loving the show and being frustrated by it.

So, to celebrate the end of a summer filled with confusion, cancelled weddings, and constant online speculation, our social editor has highlighted three unexpected lessons from this season.

Spoilers below!

1. Quit the Corporate Ladder

Season 3 felt just like home for LSE students, who, after long days interning at investment banks, watched Denise and Steven sell their souls to the corporate world.

It was all too LSE-coded until their VC internship lost its sparkle, prompting the pair to reject the corporate climb to start their own company. As the new cycle of graduate applications begins, the pair’s decision remains a wistful thought.

2. Moving Cities Fixes All Messes

Season 3 followed a string of poor decision-making, resulting in the main characters embroiling themselves in an unrecoverable mess. The solution? Booking a last-minute flight to Paris, with a pinch of blissful ignorance towards visas and language barriers. Whilst painfully unrealistic, Jenny Han’s universe effortlessly romanticises the idea of fresh starts, making a permanent Euro-summer more appealing than ever.

3. Social Media ‘Easter Eggs’ will Exacerbate Your Trust Issues

With the show’s widespread popularity and connections to Taylor Swift’s discography, the show birthed a new genre of conspiracy theorists. Fans dissected a range of clues, from colour palettes to intricate cross-references to the book that the show is based upon.

Wild speculation was constant. In fact, half the fun of watching was dispelling multiple myths you had seen on social media beforehand. From predicted announcements of two more episodes, a hopeful feature of Taylor Swift’s new album, or unexpected deaths, fans certainly created endless uncertainty about what was possible within the show’s storyline.

Aashi unpacks some of the subtler takeaways from this summer's trending television show.
