On Wednesday 1 February, Chief Operating Officer Dr. Andrew Young sent a schoolwide email to inform staff and students that there may be unexpected system outages on LSE’s IT networks in the following days, owing to a precautionary investigation into “unusual activity”.
In a follow-up email on Thursday 7 February, Dr. Young noted that system outages are likely to continue in the next few days. As a result, LSE’s remote desktop may remain unavailable off-campus, and other services including LSE for You may be impacted.
The second email described how LSE’s Building Management System has also been impacted by this incident, with implications on the heating, cooling, and hot water systems in some areas on campus. Presently, Clement House’s heating has been affected, as has the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre’s heating and hot water.
Dr. Young assured students and staff that Estates staff are working to resolve all issues, and that LSE’s specialist contractor would attend on-site to put in place a local solution whilst this incident continues. Estates staff are also replacing routine monitoring checks with manual checks to assess affected areas.
Lastly, the email contained a directive to a dedicated webpage to provide further status updates as the situation develops and Data Technology Services continue to investigate the issue.
