With FLIPSIDE’s inaugural full year about to come to a close, it is prime time to look back at how far we’ve come and how far we have yet to go.
FLIPSIDE consists of four very tenuous sections. SOCIAL has come and gone under dozens of names — Union, Lifestyle, Walk: about, Be: about, Clubbing, Fucking, etc. It is in our greatest hopes that Social is actually here to stay for once. Time will tell.
To Chris: You have been, for lack of better a term, a weird addition to the team. From your strangely lukewarm takes and frequent cancellations of Morgan, I think we can all say that we have become slightly more woke because of you. And just like you, the content you have created for us is diverse and has stoked interesting conversations around campus.
REVIEW is an entirely new section, seceded from Part B. As a new section, there has been a lot of new boundaries to draw and – hopefully – Part B will not re-annex it.
To Rahul: You are an absolute angel. The time and effort you have singlehandedly put in to make sure REVIEW does not fall apart is inspiring. When FLIPSIDE encounters hard calls to make, I have kept your dedication in mind. We absolutely cannot let FLIPSIDE fail, if only to let REVIEW continue on.
SPORT has not had the best history in The Beaver. From sexist headlines to being the only fun section in an overly straight-laced paper, SPORT is pretty much the black sheep in The Beaver. On the other hand, SPORT has historically been eye-catching, a part of the paper that many people who would not pick it up otherwise have read.
To Seth and Luke: Thank you for trying to re-capture the content of the glory days. SPORT has struggled with content all year but when push came to shove, the content has been both fun and thought provoking. Hopefully, SPORT will grow back to a size and stature that makes people excited to pick up the paper again and want to write for the paper.
A benefit of being the FLIPSIDE editor is that I have been allowed to interact with a wide range of BNOCs and the opportunity to learn from all of them.
Thank you to Eileen and Martha for teaching me that we can’t wait for the things we need—we can and need to demand the things we deserve.
Thank you to Jerome and Eloise for teaching me that if you combine all your passions, you will be able to find that intersection where everything works out.
Thank you to Jad, Ryan, and Anna, for reminding me that we come from a wide range of experiences and we all have a lot to learn from each other.
Thank you to Samir for teaching me that we have to take life a little less seriously sometimes, but that doesn’t mean we let the important things slide.
Thank you to Tess for your bravery.
Thank you to Alex for showing us the faith he continues to have in humanity.
Thank you to Steph for reminding me where I come from and how much we can grow if we stay open-minded.
Thank you to Katie for teaching me that we can make a change.
And thank you to Adam and Morgan and Jacob for taking a chance on me and a section fuelled by sex and alcohol. It’s been a great adventure.
