LSESU Education Officer Josh Goldman resigns

By Alan Nemirovski and Vanessa Huang

Josh Goldman resigned from his position as LSESU Education Officer on Wednesday 11 October 2023. In his letter of resignation, he cited personal reasons as the reason he is unable to continue carrying out the duties of his role.

In a statement published by the LSESU on the same day, they wrote they want to assure students that the SU is evaluating the next steps moving forward “to ensure that the responsibilities of the role are covered throughout the rest of this academic year.” James Relf, LSESU General Secretary, added, “Work has already begun on this, and the student community will be updated within the coming weeks.”

Goldman was elected in Lent (Winter) Term 2023 and commenced his role on 1 July 2023; he was set to undertake a one-year term in the full-time paid role. As a Sabbatical Officer, Goldman sat on the Trustee Board, which is responsible for the “legal, strategic and financial health of the Students’ Union.” As Education Officer, he was “responsible for leading change in teaching and learning within LSE,” according to the LSESU website.

“[The Education Officer] will raise awareness of academic issues, liaising with students, academic representatives, academics, and the directorate to ensure that students have a voice and representation within the SU and the University. [They] will also take the lead on national education policy and issues.”

When asked about the possibility of a by-election, Relf commented, “We will be assessing all options and exploring how viable a by-election will be at this point in the academic year – we will get back to our student community in due course.”

This is a developing story. It will be updated as more details are released. In the meantime, James Relf has told The Beaver that students may contact the LSESU with any question regarding the situation: su.info@lse.ac.uk
