Professor Dilly Fung to retire in September

By Sofia Lammali

Pro-Director for Education, Professor Dilly Fung, has announced her retirement for the end of the academic year. An LSE spokesperson has confirmed that Professor Fung will leave her role in September 2022, with the process for recruiting her successor to begin shortly.

She tweeted on 27 January: “It’s been an amazing four years at LSE. We’ve all achieved so much to improve education and students’ experiences, despite Covid. Nine years in London (thanks to all at UCL too), now I need to finish the job then enjoy Devon, family and writing my novel!”

Professor Fung has overseen student education across the School since July 2018, alongside her role as a Professor in Practice at the LSE School of Public Policy, where her research has focused on analysing the relationship between research, learning, student agency, and leadership.

Professor Fung told The Beaver: “It has been a great privilege to work with so many exceptional colleagues and students during my time at LSE. Together we have achieved so much, from enriching research-rich education practises to developing opportunities for students to make an impact at LSE and beyond.”

“Until my departure, I look forward to continuing with the critical work set out in Educate for Global Impact as we equip students with the insights, skills and confidence they need to become independent thinkers, critical investigators and thought-leaders of tomorrow.”

The Director, Minouche Shafik, also commented on Professor Fung’s impact at the School: “We have come a long way since 2018 and, despite unexpected disruptions, seen transformations take place…under Dilly’s excellent stewardship. I have always been struck by Dilly’s commitment to working collaboratively and creatively with everyone across our School community…”

Outside of LSE, she has been involved in various external initiatives and networks including roles as a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. She is also an active reviewer for a number of higher education-focused academic journals.
