When The Whole World Is Burning

By Emma Gallagher

When the whole world is burning,

We huddle closer to stay warm,

Watching wide-eyed, unbelieving

We’re in the eye of the storm.

Watching what we love going down in flames,

Something lights up from within.

A fire in our hearts, burning for change,

Knowing somehow, the good must win.

How do I help? How do I do better?

How do I craft a way forward ?

Be the change, make the change, fight the change,

Beg, scream, cry and shout

When does change become radical?

When will they finally see change is the only way?

That this cannot go on this cannot keep happening,

We’re out of time – we need it today.

Places filled with love and hope,

Burning through anger and hate.

There is anguish and pain and an ache for better,

The time for progress can no longer wait.

Hope. What is hope in the face of all this?

To stare into flames and see the light

To believe that good will win at the end of this all,

It will get better, it has to get better right?

For now we stand hand in hand

And face the flames together.

The fire may grow, but not without a fight:

I know that tomorrow will be better

Through the fear there is love,

There is passion and there is hope.

For buildings may burn, and the shouting get louder,

But in the face of it all, there are hearts alight.

On seeing hope through the chaos, by Emma's reflection
