Rory Moore has been awarded a Points of Light award for outstanding service to the community by the Prime Minister and the United Nations.
Rory Moore, a second-year International Relations student, has recently been awarded a Points of Light award for his volunteer work over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. Moore set up the Coronavirus Community Volunteering (CCV) to help the isolated and vulnerable in his local community at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic last year. Moore and the volunteer network he amassed made a difference in helping with day-to-day lives of community members by delivering groceries or being a friendly ear at the end of the phone.
LSE’s global community helped Moore take CCV beyond his hometown, as Moore connected with friends and acquaintances and soon discovered demand for the service worldwide. An app was set up to connect volunteers with those in need across the world, and the organisation has grown to become the largest worldwide for COVID-19-related volunteering with 35,000 volunteers across 40 countries.
In a personal letter to Rory, Prime Minister Boris Johnson wrote:
“You are an inspiration and testament to the power of our youth in tackling one of the greatest challenges of our time.”
Rory said of his award to The Beaver:
“I started CCV because I wanted to make a difference during what has been a very difficult time for many people, and I was also keen to encourage others to help out in their communities. I’d encourage fellow students to volunteer because it can be very rewarding knowing that you’ve helped others, and it’s a great chance to meet new people too.”
