“Bet you thought you’d seen the last of me.”

Avengers: Infinity War better step aside because the true most ambitious crossover event has arrived. It’s Murder House meets Coven meets the end of the world and American Horror Story’s loyal fanbase is here for it.

Seasons of AHS boast remarkable casts, and this year is no different. Sarah Paulson will reprise her roles from seasons one and three as well as play a new character, Mrs Wilhemina Venable. Evan Peters and Taissa Farmiga will also reprise their season one roles, with Peters playing a new character and Farmiga playing her season three character again, too.

After sitting out many of the show’s later seasons, Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott will return to play the dysfunctional Harmons, with Jessica Lange reappearing to creep us out as Constance Langdon. The witches from Coven are back, including Stevie Nicks, Lily Rabe, Frances Conroy, Gabourey Sidibe and Emma Roberts. Madison Montgomery sums it up perfectly: “Surprise bitch. Bet you thought you’d seen the last of me.” Also returning are Kathy Bates, Cheyenne Jackson, Adina Porter, and Cult’s Leslie Grossman, Billie Lourd and Billie Eichner.

The most notable newbie is Cody Fern, who made an impression in Ryan Murphy’s other show this year – American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace. He will play the grown-up version of Michael Langdon, the child Vivian Harmon gave birth to at the end of Murder House. Somehow Murphy was also able to get Joan Collins to join the cast to play Evan Peters’ character’s mother.

The first episode sets up the titular apocalypse, caused by an undisclosed country firing nuclear missiles to targets around the world. The ensuing chaos and nuclear winter wipe out much of the world’s population. A handful of bunkers accommodate individuals selected for their ‘superior’ genes as well as those rich enough to buy their way in. But Mrs Venable has gone rogue and is playing her own game with the other inhabitants. It’s likely that the arrival of the Antichrist, or mysterious beasts living on the edge of the grounds, will ruin her fun.

This season looks to be interesting enough to make it most of the way through, but appearances by previous seasons’ characters will be the main motivation to continue going.
