The LSE celebrates as it has been ranked second in the world in social science and management subjects in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. 2019 means this has been the case for the seventh consecutive year.
Comparing individual subjects, 13 LSE disciplines were placed in the QS global top ten.
These include: Social Policy, which was ranked first in the world, second for Geography, and fourth for Anthropology.
The LSE ranks 38th in the world according to the QS rankings, below KCL and UCL. However reasoning behind this is because LSE provides a more narrow set of subjects compared to other universities, but excels at individual ones.
The LSE Director Minouche Shafik commented: “Our position as a world leader in these rankings – for the seventh year in a row – is well-deserved recognition for the outstanding work taking place across the School.
Through our unwavering commitment to the social sciences having global impact, LSE will continue to educate students and generate ideas that help shape the world’s political, economic and social future for the better.”
The university also achieved highly in other individual rankings such as: Development Studies; Politics and IR; Sociology and Communication, among others.
Saskia Straub, a first year Environment and Development student, told The Beaver: “Being taught by leading experts in their fields is truly a privilege. I feel proud that the department is receiving the recognition it deserves.”
Jemma Stewart, second year Social Policy student, also reflected on the rankings saying: “I am really happy. The department surely deserves the world number one! They are all so lovely and are very quick to help us out when we need help”.
Published annually since 2011, QS World University Rankings by subject are based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact. The rankings use data from 1,200 universities from 78 countries.
