Nacho Valentine: Nachos Cancelled Indefinitely

The SU’s Valentine’s Day special Nachos night has been cancelled due to a feeling that there would be little demand for the event, which was due to take place on Friday, 15th February.

The event once again promised “pop/commercial/cheesy hits”, with a standard ticket costing £6.50, but students will have to find another way to celebrate Valentine’s…

Will Stein, who sits on the Student Events Team (SET), a group that was established this year in order to support the SU with planning student events, spoke to The Beaver about the cancellation.

He said: “I didn’t get the vibe that we would have enough demand to run a Nachos, especially as it was the Friday just before reading week,” going on explain this was also because “Nachos wasn’t on everyone’s radar”. Stein emphasised the need for a regular event to be established early in the year.

In order to create the space for a regular event next year the SU will be employing an Events and Entertainment Coordinator, who will support SET and other LSESU events during the year. The SU have already started planning the launch of a regular freshers’ orientated Friday night event for the next academic year.

Stein emphasised in his statement to The Beaver that “for a club night to be successful it has to be established in the first few weeks of uni, turning it into a regular motive” and, due to staffing and time pressures on SU staff, this did not happen this academic year.

Though he ruled out Nachos being rescheduled this year, Stein did state his love for the night and commitment to it as a great night out.

The Nacho Valentine’s special, marketed with the hashtag ‘#NachoAverageValentine’, is the latest SU event to be cancelled. In October, the Halloween special Lift Friday was cancelled, with the SU stating “lower than expected pre-event tickets sales gave us the opportunity to assess what would be best for our student population.” Unlike Lift, however, Nachos was an internally organised and marketed event.
